Seven Chagrin Valley Conference wrestlers won individual district titles and 11 others will follow them to the state tournament next weekend after finishing among the top four at their respective weight classes over the weekend.
Perry’s Zach Bellissimo (106) and Colin Koenig (145) and Harvey’s Jayden Jackson (170) each won a district championship at the Division II Perry District while Hawken’s Patrick Reineke (113), Kirtland’s Will Davidson (120), Lutheran West’s Donovan Palmer (160), and Berkshire’s Lucas Stoddard (182) won their titles at the Division III Garfield Heights District.
Bellissimo won just one match at the district tournament last season while Koenig placed fourth.
Meanwhile, at Garfield Heights, Reineke won his second straight district title and placed for the third consecutive season. Stoddard was a runner-up last season and placed fifth the year before and Palmer was third as a junior before winning his title this season. Davidson made his first trip to the district podium.
Joining the seven district champions at the Division II state tournament in Columbus next week are Geneva’s Caleb Selman (160), Orange’s Te’Andre Allen (120), Perry’s Brock Christian (120) and Calvin Rowan (138), and West Geauga’s Jack Sparent (126).
Allen placed third at the Division II Norwalk District while the rest competed at Perry. Chagrin Falls’ Sam Partain placed fifth at Norwalk and will be a state alternate.
Christian, Sparent, and Selman each placed third while Rowan was fourth.
Perry’s Riley Rowan placed fifth at 113 and Harvey’s Carl Sicker was fifth at 138. Both will be state alternates.
West Geauga’s Robert Kaleal (120), Perry’s Ryan Berdysz (132), Geneva’s Jesse McElroy, and Perry’s Ethan Hicks (152) all placed sixth at the Perry district tournament.
In Division III, Berkshire’s Josh Brown (152), Cardinal’s Jerry Rose (182), Crestwood’s J.P. Wrobel (120), Grand Valley’s Chase Cottrell (220), and Kirtland’s Brennon Braud (182) and Anthony Gencarelli (195) also qualified for the state tournament.
Rose finished second to Stoddard in all CVC final at 182 pounds. Wrobel and Cottrell both placed third, and Brown, Braud, and Gencarelli all were fourth at the Garfield Heights district.
Crestwood’s Ethan Strahan placed fifth at 138 and will be a state alternate.
Berkshire’s Justin Heiden (120), Independence’s Brian Vollman (182), and Lutheran West’s Michael Reddick (220) all earned a spot on the district podium as each placed sixth in his respective weight class.
State pairings are due to be released by 12:00 p.m. on March 8.
