Berkshire, Perry, West Geauga win sectional titles

Led by sectional team champions Berkshire, Perry, and West Geauga, the Chagrin Valley Conference will be well represented at next weekend’s district wrestling tournaments.

A total of 103 wrestlers from the league kept alive their dreams for a state title by placing among the top four in their respective weight classes at one of several area sectional tournaments on Saturday.

Berkshire hosted a Division III sectional and the Badgers pulled ahead of second-place Tuslaw during the semifinals round of the upper weight classes and held that lead. Berkshire finished with 223 ½ points while Tuslaw was second with 199 ½. Cardinal and Kirtland placed third and fourth, respectively, while Grand Valley and Hawken finished ninth and 12th in the team race.

Winning sectional titles for the Badgers were Alex Munn (138), Josh Brown (152), and Lucas Stoddard (182). Colin Hering (106), Justin Heiden (120), Johnny Heiden (132), and J.J. Perrin (195) each placed second and Josh Tribuzzo (126) was third. Hunter Gifford (145), Tyler Fien (160), and Aidan Sayre (220) will join their Berkshire teammates at the Garfield Heights district as they all finished fourth.

Other CVC sectional champions included Hawken’s Patrick Reineke (113), Kirtland’s Will Davidson (120) and Anthony Gencarelli (195), and Grand Valley’s Chase Cottrell (220).

Cardinal’s Austin Strever (152) and Jerry Rose (182) and Kirtland’s Louka Babic (160) each placed second.

The remaining CVC district qualifiers from the Berkshire sectional included Grand Valley’s Zach Hall (fourth at 170), Jaret Takacs (fourth at 195), and Daniel Wilkes (fourth at 285), Kirtland’s Daniel Bak (third at 106), Drew Duncan (fourth at 126), and Brennon Braud (third at 182), Cardinal’s Clayton Carman (fourth at 106), Logan Strever (third at 145), Josh Ripley (third at 170), and John Avalon (third at 258), and Hawken’s Jacob Hlifka (third at 138),

Perry had 13 of its wrestlers place among the top four in cruising to the team title at Harvey. The Pirates scored 234 points. Geneva was fourth with 160 and Harvey placed fifth with 133.

Winning sectional titles were Perry’s Zach Bellissimo (106), Brock Christian (120), Colin Koenig (145), Ethan Hicks (152), and Tommy Jackson (220), Geneva’s Brier Streets (113) and Caleb Selman (160), and Harvey’s Carl Sicker (138) and Jayden Jackson (170).

Harvey’s Elijah Rowdy (132) and Deondre Smith (152), Geneva’s Jesse McElroy (145) and Perry’s Calvin Rowan (138) all placed second.

Other CVC district qualifiers from the Harvey sectional included Geneva’s Jayden Sabol (fourth at 120), Ayden Gillespie (fourth at 126), Michael Hupertz (third at 182), Alex Krieg (third at 195), and Antonio Saldana (third at 285), Harvey’s Thomas Sicker (third at 145) and Antonio Poole (third at 220), and Perry’s Riley Rowan (third at 113), Dominici Ciolli (third at 126), Ryan Berdysz (fourth at 132), Jimmy Thomas (third at 170), Jory Panza (fourth at 182), Kenny Walker (fourth at 195), and A.J. Kifus (fourth at 285).

West Geauga scored 201 points to win the team title at the Division II Lake Catholic sectional. Edgewood finished fourth with 132 ½ points.

The Wolverines advanced 11 wrestlers to next week’s Perry District tournament.

Jack Sparent (126) and Lucas Sadler (285) both won individual titles and Ty Boze (106), Dante Mirabelli (152), and Damian Gambrill (160) each placed second for the Wolverines. Robert Kaleal (120) and Nathan Meyers (195) both finished third and Moore Gambrill (113), Robert Sabol (145), Justin Artino (170), and James Mullally (182) all placed fourth.

Edgewood’s Jared Biller (126), Kyle Biller (138), and Josh Biller (145) all finished as the runner-up in their respective weight classes while Joey Jafarace (third at 106), Austin Paneto (fourth at 152), Troy Peterson (third at 220), and Will Cooper (third at 285) also punched their ticket to the district tournament.

Lakeside placed sixth at the Division I Brecksville District and qualified five wrestlers to the district tournament.

Ethan Wannett was the runner-up at 138 pounds while Lucas Eland (fourth at 106), Alfonso Rodrigo (fourth at 113), Luis Guevara (fourth at 152), and Kaleb Scaine (fourth at 220) also advanced.

Beachwood, Chagrin Falls and Orange all had three wrestlers place at the Division II Beachwood sectional.

Orange’s Te’Andre Allen was the lone CVC wrestler to win an individual title at the sectional. He claimed first place at 126 pounds. Orange’s Grant Bell (182) and Fred Berland (195) finished second and fourth, respectively.

Eric Steckner finished third at 160 for the Bison while Joshua Greenwood (138) and Uzonna Nzekwe (285) both were fourth.

Chagrin Falls had Sam Partain place third at 152 and Harrison Fritz (113) and Owen McClintock (182) place fourth.

Crestwood advanced three wrestlers out of the Division III Northwestern Sectional.

J.P. Wrobel (120), Drake Rennecker (132), and Ethan Strahan (138) all placed third for the Red Devils and will compete at Garfield Heights next weekend.

A pair of CVC wrestlers claimed individual titles at the Division III Independence Sectional.

Lutheran West’s Donovan Palmer won at 160 while Independence’s Brian Vollman took home the 182-pound crown. Independence’s Collin Patton (120), Jack Valenti (126), and Ben Vitron (220) all finished third for Independence, who placed third at the event.

Other CVC district qualifiers included Brooklyn’s Isaiah Perez (fourth at 106), Cuyahoga Heights’ Dustin Kattler (third at 132), Camden Pluth (third at 138), and Andrew Jakubczak (fourth at 145), Independence’s Vinnie Kubicki (fourth at 113) and David Dorko (fourth at 195), Lutheran West’s Michael Reddick (third at 220), and Trinity’s John Krakora (fourth at 182).
